The organizing committee of the 2003 Guangzhou International Documentary Film Festival chose the five-star Dong Fang Hotel as the festival location because of its historical importantance. It is the only historically listed hotel in Guangzhou.

The Dong Fang Hotel was the first five star hotel in Guangzhou. It is situated between Guangzhou's two most beautiful parks and adjacent to the theatre district in an exciting and vibrant city. Renowned for its traditional architecture, the hotel has accommodated many famous guests.

The committee visited the hotel on 8th September 2003. The Public Relations Department of the hotel introduced their facilities and services, impressing everybody with their professionalism and attention to detail. Based on the requirements of the festival; guest rooms, gardens, restaurants, conference rooms, theatre and communication equipment were all carefully inspected. The committee wanted to make sure all participants would enjoy the accommodation, food and convenience of the hotel as well as be assured of high quality provision of services, neccessary for an event of this nature.

Recently refurbished by an international design team, the hotel boasts the biggest multifunctional exhibition space in Guangzhou. The main conference room can support long distance audio-visual conferencing. Internet access is available in all guest rooms and in several public areas. Guest rooms are beautifully appointed and the hotel restaurants feature a variety of local and international cuisines. The organizing committee were very satisfied with the hotel.
