Title:For the Best and the Onion

Jury Comment by Emmanuel LINCOT

The events in the film unfold inside the Haoussa community in Niger. The harvest of onions, the local agricultural vegetable, is prepared while two families are approaching the wedding of two of their members.

Those who are familiar with the works of Jean Rouch will easily recognize the similarities with classical documentary making. The film is a mixture of an anthropological survey and an observational documentary dealing with the evolution of a society in Africa. The Jury was in particular impressed by the sequences around the local rituals and the fact that the film reflects an African, as well as a singular situation.

Title:Another Perfect World

Jury Comment by Marcel GOLDING

"Another Perfect World" captures the inter-generational change taking place in our society through the internet world, where people live out their fantasies, interest and pleasures. It shows the attempts to democratise user participation in the games and avatars they create, yet, when it comes to the real world, the user still has to conform to paying fees, levys and other associated costs. Online gaming is, after all, a multi-million dollar business.

The filmmaker captures this very interesting subject with much graphic details and interviewing personnalities that shape the industry, both online and in the real World. An area of virtual worlds that is growing every day and can no longer be ignored.

Title:TICKET TO PARADISE

Jury comment for TICKET TO PARADISE by Peter du CANE

The dream of many poor villagers in Thailand is to change their lives by having a daughter marry an affluent foreigner. “Ticket to Paradise” concentrates on stories involving Danish Men and their Thai girlfriends and wives.

The Jury believes that this film delivers a finely constructed, in-depth look at how these cross-culture human dramas can unfold. Never sensationalizing the subject matter, it concentrates on the roller-coaster ride of emotions for both the male and the female characters involved, in the end, delivering a fine insight into the deceptively simple subject matter.

Title:The Red Race

Jury Comment by SITU Zhaodun

An endless red race reflects pressure and hardship faced by children during their growth and various social problems as well. The film, which focuses on ordinary individuals in a community, inspires the audience, making them think and judge by themselves. The film follows a clear clue with strong rhythms. It is both entertaining and thought-provoking.

5.Jury Prize Official Competition

Title:Hair India

Jury Comment by Hyechung EUN

The Director cleverly picks up the element of hair to take us on an insightful journey from dedicated religious rituals in India to the highly globalized fashion business.

“Hair India” definitely succeeds to show several layers of conflicts which lie in the contrast between modern society and tradition, as well as the contrasts within a country vividly exposed to globalization. The viewer, as a bonus, gets an opportunity to see how contemporary Indian women socialise in Mumbay.

6.Special Mention Official Competition

Title:PLAYGROUND

Jury Comment for PLAYGROUND by Michel NOLL

This compelling documentary by American Director Libby Spears dares to touch upon the taboo issue of paedophelia in the United States. It exposes this shocking reality as one of the dark sides of the sex-driven American society, delivers witnesses of abused children and daringly questions the deeper reasons and ramifications for this phenomenon in one of the world’s leading countries.

The Jury feels that this film is an excellent example of what investigative documentaries can achieve when analyzing society and shows how a critical perspective can actually contribute to understand complex phenomena, and therewith open the door for beneficial treatment and legislation.

7.Chinese Director Prize

Title:FOR THE LOVE OF SHAKESPEARE

Jury comment for by EUN Hyechung

Zhu Chunguang's film "For the love of Shakespeare" deals with the potentially controversial subject of traditional versus contemporary methods of teaching foreign languages in today's China.

The film produced a lively debate amongst the jury about the process of documentary film making on a number of levels. The jury was particularly impressed that this independent documentary maker had achieved financing for his production independently from the major Chinese broadcasters by attending an overseas market and preselling the project to Japan's major broadcaster NHK.

Chinese Director Prize

Title:GRASSROOT

Jury comment for GRASSROOT by Emmanuel LINCOT

A self-made man in Jiangxi Province develops the opportunity for local farmers to create a “do-it-yourself” TV series, i.e. direct, perform, make up, film, and watch their own program. A real experience of the creation of free and self-entertaining television, or user-generated-content as this experience would be the termed today. The documentary by HAN Lei is, in a way, the often hilarious, but always thought-provoking “making-of” of this TV series.

The Jury feels compelled to encourage this kind of film because of its independent spirit and its inbuilt denial and/or parody of the prevailing mass media culture.

Chinese Director Prize

Title:THE SURVIVAL MIANZHU

Jury comment for THE SURVIVAL by SITU Zhoadun

The filmmaker focuses on the value of individual lives in the face of a catastrophe. The film observes and records issues happened to the individuals with a unique insight and a calm attitude. Simple but thought-provoking, it has a good control over life rhythm.

8.JURY GRAND PRICE

Title: Forgetting Dad

Jury Comment by ZHOU Hao

The film captures a private issue which seems to be restricted to a family. Dad lost his memory because of a car accident. The director takes a step-by-step way to tell a story which is closely related to everyone of us. Everyone has the right to choose their lifestyle. Respecting their choice is respecting ourselves. The film is warm and thought-provoking.

9. The Special Contribution Awards

Comment for YING Qiming

As the director of the (so far) only documentary channel in China, Mr. YING Qiming has not only pioneered in Sino-international co-productions, he has also been promoting courageously independent productions for Chinese filmmakers. This is an essential step to a healthy development of Chinese documentaries. He spares no effort to that end and we wish to encourage him to continue to support the independent sector in China. We’d like to express our very sincere thanks to him, as a most important contributor to innovative, thought-provoking and successful documentaries in this country.

10. The Special Contribution Awards

Comment for Hans-Robert EISENHAUER

As one of the most prolific commissioning editors in European television, Hans-Robert Eisenhauer has dared to open doors where others would not even venture a foot. He has created opportunities for many of us, in China and abroad, always supporting the most convincing talent, the most innovative concept and the greater story. Although very much aware of the necessities of a modern broadcaster, he has always fostered the triumph of the better idea. Through his convictions and his works, he represents a very valuable bridge between China and Europe. But in addition to that, he has created a successful arc between Business and Art, between Media and journalism.
