GZ DOC 2008 Prizewinners

1.Grand Prize
PEACE WITH SEALS
Jury Comment
The Jury collectively singled out a film that we felt was the most complete, innovative, thought-provoking and yet entertaining docmentary of all films in competiton. It is dealing with endangered species, in this case the fate of the Mediteranean Monk Seal, but manages with great style and panache to transcend the initial quest to get to the heart of the matter: our relationship with animals, with Nature as a Whole, and finally with Ourselves.

We are proud to award the Grand Prize of GZDOC 2008 to:

Milos Novak's film PEACE WITH SEALS

2.Jury Prize
Living with Shame
Jury Comment
A small town, an industry, a group of people

They work all out to purchace their dreams, even at the cost of their health, life and future.

The film reveals the paradox between survival and development in an astonishing and inspiring way. The courage of the director is most appreciated.

Good storytelling is as old as language itself, and even in the modern age, we are still enthralled by a good storyteller. Especially one who can make us love RATS!

The Jury decided to award Herbert Ostwald for BEST STORYTELLING with a special mention for his heroine, the unstoppable Miss Marple, leading rat and expert land mine detective in the film "Detecting Danger".

4.Mention Speciale——BEST ANTHROPOLOGICAL DOCUMENTARY
School on Move
Jury Comment
A pretty balance between anthropology and filmmaking, which recalls that strong documentary helps to preserve disappearing ethnic groups.

5.Mention Speciale——BEST INVESTIGATIVE DOCUMENTARY
A Killer Bargain
Jury Comment
“Killer Bargain” exposes the appalling and life-threatening conditions people and children in India have to work under for the benefit of only a few individuals in developed countries. It paints a disturbing picture where the environment is being destroyed by polluting rivers and plants through the use of deadly pesticides and corrosive chemicals.

This film highlights one of the major disadvantages of globalization, where the richer continue to get richer and the poor get poorer only this time the price is too high to pay. The men, women and children that work in these factories risk their health and are paid pittance in order for people in the first world to live so-called comfortable lives.

The documentary “A Killer Bargain” directed by Tom Heinemann bravely approaches the subject and opens the eyes of consumers to this disturbing reality that many consumers are ignorant of.

We as the jury, were unanimous in awarding this prize as we saw “A Killer Bargain” as an example of great investigative journalism which is after all, one of the major roles of television to expose social ills with the aim of improving the lives of our fellow human beings.

6.Mention Speciale——Best Direction
The Thirst of a Stone Sea
Jury Comment
“The Thirst of a Stone Sea” is a poetic and human film, taking us on a walk threw Cuce, a mountainous region of Montenegro, inviting us to meet some of its inhabitants, who seem to leave this area little by little. This meditative film combines a talented and creative stage setting with a human and sensitive approach.

We believe the viewer will be touched by these encounters and transported into these mountains, through this natural, mineral life, as we of the , were during our screening. We discovered a peaceful, strong and even harmonious link between a wild, sometimes dry, always beautiful nature and its inhabitants, a link disappearing in globalization, quietly but certainly.

We're very proud to award Vladimir Perovic with the Special Prize for Best Direction.

7. Mention Speciale——Best cinematography
The last continent
Jury Comment:
The jury decided to award the best cinematography prize to the documentary “The last continent” because of its out of this world, picturesque, breath-taking and awe-inspiring shots of the icebergs and marine life in Antarctica. But the movie is not only about pretty pictures, it deals with a subject that affects all of humanity and life on planet earth; climate change.

Directed by Jean Lemire, Canadian-based scientists and filmmakers are on an important mission to analyse and document what the effects of climate change are in Antarctica.

Ironically the harsh circumstances are not made by the freezing conditions but by the warm conditions brought about by industrial countries. This rise in temperature poses a major threat to the animal life and the continent itself and the signs of the damage and destruction are already apparent.

This is another reality check for human beings to reflect on our actions and how if we do not start looking after our environment, we will destroy all the beauty and life around us including our own. The documentary gives us another opportunity to reflect on our actions, and reverse the situation in order to make “The last continent, the first continent.
